Hematite Lake

One could say Hematite Lake is a well-kept secret, but locals know it as a beautiful place to hike just about any time of the year.

Hematite Lake is located near Lake Barkley in Land Between The Lakes, about 15 minutes north of either the Lake Barkley Bridge at Canton or the Golden Pond Visitors Center.

Great Western Iron Furnace

The remains of this limestone slab furnace are all that is left of The Great Western Iron Works. Great Western opened in 1855 and in a 34-week period produced 1,350 tons of iron. The production of high-quality iron required twenty bushels of charcoal, 800 pounds of ore, and 80 pounds of limestone.

Center Furnace in Land Between The Lakes

In the mid-1800s, the iron ore industry exploded in the area known as “Between the Rivers.”  With its prime location due to its close proximity to the Cumberland and Tennessee rivers, the industry flourished.  These rivers were the best way to transport goods since railroads did not exist in this area at that time.
